It is not often that you hear candid insights from Intelligence Community (IC) leaders on strategies that will shape the future of our national security.

However, in the latest issue of Trajectory Magazine, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Intelligence Integration Robert Cardillo explain the value of technology and culture for effective intelligence integration.

In the interview, Cardillo discussed transparency and the need to tag data and people for better security monitoring, as well as adding more mobile visualization solutions for the ODNI’s customers.  He also mentions how the IC needs help and ideas for better leveraging additional mobile solutions.

Clapper also highlighted how the IC needs to create a ‘data scientist’ role, which would be a professional who stands at the crossroads of information science, social science and computer science.

This combination of making data truly actionable in a mobile environment for enhanced visualization will clearly play a major role in intelligence integration.

Fortunately, industry members are already playing a key role in developing the most advanced data management and mobile solutions that will allow the IC to further advance national security goals. For example, the Ubiquity mobile platform we developed helps to further some of these goals with ‘smart app’ performance for relevant, actionable intelligence gathering.

As we have seen with recent headlines regarding turmoil in Egypt and Syria, it is clear that innovative intelligence gathering and response, on a national scale, will continue to be a priority for our nation.  The combined effort of both government and industry will play a critical role in helping deal with these challenges, as well as for disaster response and humanitarian efforts.

Undoubtedly intelligence integration will always be a challenge and opportunity for the IC.  We look forward to gaining more insights from IC leaders, as well as showcasing our key solutions, at GEOINT 2013.
